Rick Smith Announces Campaign for Mayor of Covington, Emphasizing Experienced Leadership at a Critical Time

Focused on Managing Growth, Strengthening Infrastructure, and Protecting Covington’s Character

Covington, LA | April 14, 2026 — As Covington continues to experience steady growth and increased development, longtime community leader Rick Smith has officially announced his candidacy for Mayor of Covington, launching a campaign focused on thoughtful planning, strong leadership, and preserving the character of the city residents know and love.

A 33-year resident of Covington, Smith and his wife, Molly, have raised their family in the same home where their children attended local schools. With deep roots in the community and a long-standing commitment to public service, Smith brings both personal investment and proven leadership experience to the race.

Smith currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the St. Tammany Parish Council (2026) and St. Tammany Parish Councilman for District 1 (January 2024–present) and has previously served on the Covington City Council as both District E Councilman (2011–2018) and Councilman At Large (August 2020–December 2024). His experience across both city and parish government gives him a well-rounded and comprehensive understanding of how decisions at every level directly impact residents, businesses, and the future of Covington.

“Covington is at a pivotal moment,” said Smith. “We’re seeing growth, opportunity, and increased demand on our infrastructure all at once. The decisions we make now will shape our city for generations. We need experienced, steady leadership that understands how to plan responsibly, avoid costly mistakes, and protect what makes Covington special.”

Smith’s campaign will focus on three core priorities: maintaining a safe and responsive city, investing in critical infrastructure such as roads, drainage, water, and sewer systems, and supporting local businesses that drive the local economy.

In addition, Smith is committed to fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and effectively. He also emphasized the importance of enhancing quality of life through continued investment in parks and recreation, beautification efforts, the arts, community events, and the preservation of Covington’s historic districts.

“This isn’t just where I live, it’s home,” Smith said. “I care deeply about this community and the people in it. I want to make sure we grow in a way that protects our identity while creating opportunities for future generations.”

A key pillar of Smith’s campaign is accessibility and communication. He has pledged to maintain open lines of communication with residents, including direct access and regular town hall meetings to ensure voices are heard and concerns are addressed.

“City government should be accessible, transparent, and responsive,” Smith said. “Residents deserve to feel heard and to know they have a voice in the decisions that impact their daily lives.”

The Covington mayoral election will take place on April 17, 2027.
